Posted: Jan 21, 2010 10:19 am EST
(ThePoles.com, updated Feb 21 & Feb 22, 02.33 am) “All equipment must be in Ottawa by the 28th of January in order to get it to Resolute Bay by the 15th of February,” alerted Resolute Bay Expedition Services, Qausuittuq Inns North [Ed note update: Resolute Bay Expedition Services was previously known as High Arctic International Explorers Services].
They specialize in catering to major North Pole expedition teams. Manager Andrew Prysiazniuk sent word to ExplorersWeb about their new website with valuable information.
Getting gear through Ottawa
This year’s North Pole season is going to be a busy one and High Arctic International Explorers Services has written the following on their website:
“Getting expedition equipment and gear through Ottawa this year is proving to be a major issue as Resolute Bay has had 10 outage days this winter already and the replacement of the jet with an ATR on the Iqaluit to Resolute run, has limited capacity, significantly.”
“Because of this, we now have experienced assistance in Ottawa that will assist expeditions to ship equipment ahead and transferred to First Air.”
“This will allow you to ship early and gear that contains food will be able to be shipped by the lower food mail rate.”
“First Air cargo rates: January 19, 2010. Ottawa to Resolute
First Air food rate. $9.23 per kilo
Regular freight: $10.64 per kilo”
“All equipment must be in Ottawa by the 28th of January in order to get it to Resolute Bay by the 15th of February.”
“The bottle neck this year is in Iqaluit as jet service to Iqaluit is OK, but getting it on the ATR for the flight to Resolute is the bottleneck in 2010.”
“First Air has said they may be running the Hawker to Res. to handle the extra loads this year, but not sure yet.”
“As a note, all shipping costs can be paid through the hotel this year to provide a one contact payment point.”

Resolute Bay Expedition Services, Qausuittuq Inns North is an expedition base camp hotel facility in Resolute Bay that specializes in catering to North Pole expedition teams.
In 1997, the High Arctic International Explorer Services Ltd facility, which had served the North Pole expeditions since 1977, was purchased by the local Co-op, after Bezal Jusadsons death in 1995 and is now owned by the residents of Resolute Bay.
The expedition business is based now in a new, modern facility located in front of the existing historical buildings and a southern, Ottawa based gear expediting assistance has been added to assist in equipment transfers to Resolute Bay this year.
The new facility has room for 9 expedition members, has a modern kitchen and has microwaves and refrigerators, wireless internet, in each room as well as washers and dryers on site.
