New route attempts were rare, the North Pole was quiet. But we got the first winter ascent of a Pakistan 8000er, a rare ascent of K2, and a fairytale Everest paraglide. Here go some of the main news from the year that passed.
01
01
ExWeb has been updated with a new system for a brand new, global and current experience of world adventure. The Polish bagged the first winter ascent of G1 but there is still no word from Gerfried, Nisar and Cedric approaching the top via a new route.
01
01
Norway's Prime Minister, the press and over 100 tourists are already at the South Pole Station, preparing to commemorate Amundsen's arrival anniversary. Question is though - where are the skiers? Don't miss the thrilling final race for the South Pole!
01
01
It's gearing up to a phenomenal winter climbing season. News about the winter Russians on K2 put the climbing community on its feet. Meanwhile the South Pole anniversary project at ExplorersWeb, comparing live and historic expedition dispatches, has become a remarkable adventure in itself.
01
01
"So here end the entries in this diary with the first chapter of our History. The future is in the lap of the gods." (Scott diary). 100 years later, a new South Pole race is on. But just as Himalaya folded and Antarctica kicked off, we lost one of the greatest explorers of both worlds.
01
01
Summits, rescues, controversies and politics in remote Himalaya. Antarctica anniversary kicking off with side-by-side now-and-then dispatches. Tech news, interviews, and great men lost. The past weeks have been unusually busy at ExplorersWeb.
01
01
K2 summited for the first time since 2008 (2007 for the north side) and Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner bagging the first female No-O2 14x8000ers. Leila Esfandyari lost on GII. BSES youth killed by polar bear on Svalbard. Plane crash in Resolute. It's been a rollercoaster month. Let's go straight to it.
01
01
Pakistan high altitude climbing is full throttle but hard; only scattered victories so far. Meanwhile the past two weeks brought out interesting interviews and some major stories; one such touching the final flight of the shuttle.
01
01
Climbing statistics, a new list of Pakistan expeditions. Antarctica anniversary technology kick-off and 'Bits from the Silver Bullet' new Silicon Valley adventure tech series. A camel caravan to K2 north side, a few early summit pushes and one success already in Pakistan: Here goes a wrap from Explo

The 2011 spring climbing season brought a parade of summits, especially on Everest. Check out the lows and the highs in Himalaya, along with other news such as Skog and Gjeldnes for a North Pole summer expedition. Kicking off next week; what will the Pak season be like post Bin Laden?
01
01
Greg Mortenson on trial, Erhard Loretan killed, Ueli Steck's unexpected climb, Abele Blanc done at last: in a fairly calm (so far) Himalaya climbing season the news have been anything but. Other: Osama Bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in a mansion on KKH close to Islamabad today, Sunday.
01
01
Waiting for Himalaya action to take off, ExplorersWeb ran a 5-part Space special, checking up on the commercial outfits there. The Arctic Barneo landing strip cracked open. HumanEdgeTech brought news about 3D streaming over satellite. Everest south reported 3G with a 2G feel.
01
01
No one made it out to the edge of the Arctic ice from Canada this year. At least choppers have taken off for Borneo, on the Russian side of the North Pole. Lists of expeditions are up for Himalaya and summer Karakoram both, along with a M&I special, winter Denali debrief and interview with Berserk's
01
01
Last we left off, Gasherbrum II had a historic first winter summit but since then all attempts have been in naught. A Supermoon could shake up Ben Saunders, Berserk is lost (and criticized), the Arctic season is over for most already, and next gen Feather have arrived.
01
01
It has been an unexpectedly action-packed week at ExplorersWeb. The winter summit of GII made waves with a very hard descent, and the situation in Egypt had our team scramble to find related explorers for comments. All ending well, time came to look to the future in a big 2011 tech outlook.
01
01
"Summit at 11:35. Going down." A Pakistan 8000er has been summited in winter for the first time ever, adding a new and major page to mountaineering history. Also this morning to celebrate: an ExWeb exclusive Karakoram 3D Mountain Tracker complete with all winter teams' locations and updates.
