Remains on K2 not Marty or Denali Schmidt

Marty and Denali Schmidt were killed in 2013 when they tried to become the first father-son duo to reach the K2 summit.
The remains of climbers found buried on K2 were not those of Sequoia di Angelo’s father and brother.

Di Angelo flew from her home in America to Pakistan in August to trek to K2 base camp after a video of remains found on the world’s second highest mountain was posted online by Swiss climber Mike Horn.

The young entrepreneur lost half her family when an avalanche killed celebrated New Zealand mountaineer Marty Schmidt and his son, Denali, on their attempt to become the first father-son duo to reach the K2 summit.

Schmidt owned a house in Christchurch and had land in the North Island.

After an eight-day trek to base camp, Di Angelo retrieved the remains from a nearby glacier, including a head featured in Horn’s video. She wrapped them in white burial cloth and buried them at the base of the K2 memorial.

DNA samples were taken to be examined on her return to the US.

On Wednesday, Di Angelo confirmed the remains were not those of Marty or Denali Schmidt, but said she would have taken the trip regardless.
