First ascent of Burke-Khang

K2 Mountain

The team led by Bill Burke, the oldest American to reach the summit of Everest and return alive, has made the first ascent of Burke-Khan.

5th October, 2017 – Members of Burke’s team reached the summit of Burke-Khang (6942m) at 12:05pm, thereby succeeding in the first ascent of the mountain.

Burke-Khang is a highly technical peak situated between Mount Everest and Mount Cho-oyu in Khumbu Himal.

In appreciation of Burke’s contributions to the country, the Nepalese government named the mountain after him in May of 2014.

Burke attempted to climb Burke-Khang once in the fall of 2016 and again in the Spring of 2017.

Both attempts were unsuccessful because of heavy snow, dangerous conditions and extremely bad weather.

Burke is the oldest person to summit Mount Everest outside of Asia. His climbing achievements include climbing Everest from both Nepal and Tibet.

The successful expedition on Burke-Khang was organized by Asian Trekking.
