(ExWeb/Madrid) "Chhewang Nima Sherpa, 18x Everest summiteer, was caught in an avalanche on Mt. Baruntse (7,129m) at 4PM on October 23," Ang Tshering Sherpa of Asian Trekking told ExplorersWeb. "The slide struck from 7,045 meters."
"The search for Chhewang Nima is currently ongoing," Ang Tshering added. "A helicopter crew will search the area today; the Chhewang family will participate in the search as well."
Chhewang Nima was climbing with "Adventure Trip Baruntse Expedition Autumn 2010" under the management of Sherpa Shangri-La Treks & Expeditions Pvt. Ltd. Sources from Sherpa Shangri-La Treks told the BBC that Nima was on the north slope of the mountain fixing the ropes when the avalanche knocked him over and then down the northeast slope of the mountain.
Story updated Nov2nd: Chhewang (Chuwang) Nima Sherpa has 18 Everest summits, not 19 as we previously published. He had also summited Cho Oyu twice, thus completing a total of 20 8000+m. summits bagged.
