(Newsdesk) "We awoke at 4:30 AM Nepal time to snow, winds, & ice penetrating our tents at Camp 2. Fortunately everybody in our group was ok, however when we climbed up to Camp 3 shortly after to investigate we discovered the debris from a massive avalanche and found many climbers in distress."

American Alpine Ascents have this report and a number of pictures from the rescue.

The large avalanche struck around 20-30 climbers on Sunday. Inspiring Adventures said it took out Camp 3. IMG reported a serac fell triggering a slide that hit the camp.

At this time, local and international news sources list the following people lost on Manaslu:
Gasull Marti (Spain)
Alberto Magliano (Italy)
Rémy Lécluse (France)
Ludovic Challéat (France)
Fabrice Pray (France)
Gregory Costa (France)
Dominique Ouimet (Canada)
Christian Mittermeyer (Germany)
Dawa Dorje Sherpa (Nepal, Solokhumbu)

Reuters report a second German died while undergoing surgery at hospital in Kathmandu. The news source count 11 killed and among them 7 French.

Around 3-4 climbers remain missing (ed note: some sources claim the number is as high as 30 which is unlikely).

Kathmandu Post report that 18 climbers were rescued by a joint Simrik, Fishtail and Mountain Airlines rescue team. Thirteen others are receiving medical help at the base camp itself.

Alpine Ascents expedition leader Garrett Madison wrote about the rescue efforts yesteday:

"During the rescue & recovery in the following hours we were able to coordinate and assist evacuating over a dozen climbers on 10 helicopter flights from just below Camp 3 (20,500’)."

"Lakpa Rita Sherpa coordinated much of the helicopter evacuation by speaking directly to the pilot and supervising the packaging and transportation of patients to our makeshift helipad on the debris field."

Until only some years ago Manaslu was rarely visited by mountaineers. Commercial teams were non-existent due to the well-known risk of avalanche on the peak. In spring 1972 an avalanche killed 15 climbers there.

Only after Cho Oyu in China became restricted did outfitters begin to offer guided tours on Manaslu.

Previous (Sunday morning): According to French sources the snow mass hit a group of twenty climbers, from two French expeditions. Authorities in Nepal told media the victims are 4 French, 2 Spaniards, 1 Italian, 1 German and one Nepalese climber. Six people remain missing.
