62-year-old Slovenian mountaineer Franček Knez died in a fall in Harje, Slovenia, on Friday 6 October.
“His wife found him yesterday afternoon after a 25-meter fall,” reported his climbing partner, Silvo Karo.
Knez and Karo were climbing partners on many occasions. One of their most important achievements was their 1986 first ascent of Psycho Vertical, a route between Torre Egger and Cerro Torre in Patagonia, together with Janez Jeglic.
Throughout his life life, Knez made over 5,000 ascents and was recognized as one of the greatest representatives of Slovenian mountaineering. His achievements in national mountaineering and his contributions to the reputation of Slovenian mountaineering were recognized in 2010 when he was granted the Order of Merit by the Slovenian President.
