Kammerlander returns to Manaslu

Mountain

Italian climber Hans Kammerlander will return to climbing to attempt his 13th 8000er, after deciding to retire in 2001 due to the loss of several of his friends on Manaslu in 1991.

“Hans will begin his expedition to Manaslu on October 10. He will be followed by a film crew and his climbing companion will be Stephan Keck from Austria, the estimated expedition duration will be 6 to 8 weeks,” said a spokesperson.

Kammerlander has succeeded in more than 2,000 climbing routes in the Alps and Dolomites, including the northern Eiger, Grandes Jorasses and Matterhorn. He makes his ascents without the use of supplemental oxygen, having stated on several occasions that an ascent with oxygen makes no sense.

Hans Kammerlander has summited 12 8000ers without supplementary O2, plus Shisha Pangma central. He has opened about 50 new routes all over the world and broke some speed records. He has descended on skis many of the peaks he has climbed.
