Searchers, led by Mingma G, have managed to bring the bodies of Nirmal Purja, Wang Zhong, Nima Sherpa, and Killi Pemba “Kilu” Sherpa to Base Camp. They even made it down safely themselves, despite the risky conditions. The remains of Sohail Sakhi, Mallory Weis, and Nawang Sherpa will remain on the mountain for now.
Retrieving the bodies from their precarious location at 5,000m involved “an exceptionally challenging and technically demanding recovery operation,” according to a press release from the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Sirbaz Khan, Abid Baig, and Sherbaz Karim of Pakistan, together with Nepalese Dipen Gurung and Pemba Chhewang Sherpa, supported Mingma G.
As for the three missing bodies, the press release says: “We remain committed to supporting all possible efforts to locate and recover them, whenever conditions allow, so that they too may be returned home to their loved ones.”
