After two failed attempts and with the coming monsoon about to end the Everest season, the Chinese team is placing its hopes on a last-minute opportunity. The climbers left Advanced Base Camp on Sunday and reached Camp 1 at 7,000m today. They plan to summit tomorrow.
Yesterday, the expedition posted a video of the climbers leaving ABC:
The strategy has not changed from their previous attempts: Mountain guides from China’s National Mountaineering team leads a large team of surveyors, who are responsible for re-measuring the mountain.
Chinese surveyors have measured Everest twice before, in 1975 and 2005. The altitudes then were 8,848.13 meters and 8,844.43 meters, respectively.
