David Born is a retired academic and freelance writer.
The co-author of a book on hypothermia, he spent time in Nunavut and was adopted into an Assiniboine family in Montana. He has explored the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and had a mystical experience with mule deer in Colorado. He’s written about a one-armed pigeon racer, America’s oldest horse, a frozen farmer, and eating “Haunch of Hippopotamus Roti” in northern Minnesota.
On the downside, he had to be rescued by a lifeguard off the coast of California, has mistaken the sound of a ruffed grouse for a distant motorboat, and once turned a dead tree into a towering inferno while capturing snakes for a Boy Scout camp. He is particularly skilled at eliciting yawns from both his grandchildren and dogs with stories about “the old days.”
