Dhaulagiri Summits

Climbers summited Dhaulagiri between Friday and Sunday.

Sunday’s summiters included Jorge Egocheaga of Spain. Egocheaga completed the 14 8,000’ers — 13 without bottled oxygen — between 2014 and 2022. However, according to 8000ers.com, he didn’t reach the true summits of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and K2. Now, he has definitely ticked them off his list. Egocheaga summited K2 this summer, and Manaslu in 2023.

Besides Egocheaga, the summiters were Ping Lu of China, Catherine Bury of France, and Pem Nurbu Sherpa, Taraman Tamang, and Pemba Tasi Sherpa.

Pavlo Sydorenko of Ukraine also summited yesterday, together with IFMGA and 8K Expeditions guide Ashok Lama.

Previously, on September 26, four rope fixers, hired jointly by Seven Summit Treks and 14 Peaks Expeditions, reached the top. They were Tashi Sherpa, Lakpa Temba Sherpa, Phurba Kusang Sherpa, and Pasang Nurbu Sherpa.

More summits may be coming soon: According to the Department of Tourism, the three teams on Dhaulagiri total 24 foreign climbers. It is also possible that some of the hundreds who topped out on Manaslu last week will move to Dhaulagiri next.

Russians on Manaslu and Makalu

Denis Alekshenko and Artem Tsentsevitsky of Russia are progressing alone on Makalu and have reached 7,200m so far.

A second Russia team, led by Andrey Vasiliev, will try a new route on the Southwest Face of Manaslu. If conditions prove too difficult, they will attempt the Tyrolean route opened by Reinhold Messner in 1972 and repeated fewer than 10 times since then.

Five commercial teams are currently on on Cho Oyu’s normal route in Tibet. They are now acclimatizing on the mountain.
