Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon won by Nepalese runner.
The Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon – the highest
marathon in the world as listed in the Guinness Book of Records – was held on May 29, 2017. Starting at Gorak Shep (5184 m) close to
Everest Base Camp in Nepal, the route snakes 42 km through technical mountain terrain to finish at the Sherpa town of Namche
Bazaar at 3446 m.
First was Nepalese runner Suman Kulung with a time of 3 hours 43 minutes. Fastest International Participant was
the Salomon Suunto Team runner Pitor Hercog from Poland. Fastest female athlete was
Nirkala Ra, who came in at 4 hours 51 minutes.
The event is held annually to commemorate the
first successful ascent of Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary on 29th May, 1953.
