Viridiana Alvarez of Mexico was the first to report the good news. “At 8,027m on the summit of Shishapangma, my ninth 8,000’er,” Alvarez texted via InReach, shortly before 3 pm Nepal time.
Sources confirm that Sophie Lavaud, Kristin Harila, Matias Myklebust, Chhiring Wanchu Sherpa, Ngima Rita Sherpa, Tenjen Sherpa, and Pemba Tenjin Sherpa have also summited.
Record quests
Shishapangma is Harila’s 13th peak, as she races for all 14×8,000’ers. Harila has only Cho Oyu to go.
Harila’s 14×8,000’er quest started on Annapurna on April 28, 2022. However, Harila is officially on a second 14×8,000’ers quest this year too, apparently aiming to summit all 14 in less than six months without supplementary O2. Earlier this year, she attempted Manaslu but abandoned the expedition before Camp 2 when she received her special permit to climb in Tibet.
Harila’s team has confirmed the summit and said she will attempt Cho Oyu next, but they did not reveal whether she used oxygen.
Meanwhile, Sophie Lavaud only has Nanga Parbat left to finish her own 14×8,000m list.
