Denis Urubko set off into the night from Camp I yesterday. His partner María Cardell confirmed that Urubko will stick to his plan and attempt a new route to the summit of Gasherbrum II. “He is feeling strong and positive,” Cardell said.
He carried no cell phone or radio, preferring to follow his dream the old-fashioned way, according to his home team. So we might not hear from him till he is back at Camp 1.
Urubko intends to climb non-stop to the top and back, until he meets Don Bowie’s group. Conditions on the mountain are reportedly not ideal because of the avalanche risk, and Bowie’s team has not yet decided when to launch its own summit bid from Camp 1 up the normal route.
