Grise Fiord, the northernmost community in North America, enjoyed a rare treat today, Feb. 11. For about an hour, the sun skimmed along the southern horizon. It was the first appearance of the sun in 2023 and the first since late October.
The hamlet lies on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian High Arctic and has a mostly Inuit population of about 130. It lies at 76˚25′ North, about 1,100km above the Arctic Circle.
Amon Akeeagok of Grise Fiord captured the one-hour time lapse, looking south over frozen Jones Sound, toward an invisible Devon Island.
