The south side of Everest saw 14 summits yesterday, among them the hard-working Kami Rita Sherpa, back for the second time this week and 24th time overall. This record is not some sporting challenge, but a reflection of his hard work guiding for Seven Summit Treks.

Kami Rita was part of an eight-man Sherpa group fixing ropes to the summit last Wednesday. He then led a team of Indian Army Officers on a successful climb yesterday.

Now 49, Kami Rita was born in Thame (Solokhumbu) and climbed Everest for the first time at age 24. He has been working on the mountain ever since. In 2017, he bested Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa’s record of 21 summits.

Everest is his favorite working field, but not the only one. All together, he has made 36 ascents of 8,000m peaks, including K2 and Lhotse once each, Manalsu twice and Cho Oyu eight times.

It is coomendable for young Kami Rita Sherpaa for his 24th Everest summit , twice this season . However the excellent feat of veteran climber Apa Sherpa cannot be under mined . It is to be noted that Apa Sherpas 21 summit record as back in 2011 was only broken in 2oi8 . Incidentally Apa Sherpa retired in 2011 .
