K2: Pasang Norbu Sherpa’s Speed Attempt Stalls

Pasang Norbu Sherpa also seems to have given up on K2.

Norbu’s goal had been to climb K2 within 24 hours from bottom to top, and to get down before the weather window closed. He set off from Base Camp yesterday at 6 am local time and reached higher Camp 2 (6,670m) seven hours later.

His tracker now puts him at around 7,300m at higher Camp 3, but he appears to have stalled. His tracker has not moved in the last few hours.

Norbu’s tracker shows the usual wild deviations (likely due to satellite issues) but does not show any recent upward progress.

A history graduate from the University of Nottingham, Martin's career arc is something of a smörgåsbord. A largely unsuccessful basketball coach in Zimbabwe and the Indian Himalaya, a reluctant business lobbyist in London, and an interior design project manager in Saigon.

He has been fortunate enough to see some of the world. Highlights include tracking tigers on foot in Nepal, white-water rafting the Nile, bumbling his way from London to Istanbul on a bicycle, feeding wild hyenas with his face in Ethiopia, and accidentally interviewing Hezbollah in Lebanon.

His areas of expertise include adventure travel, hiking, wildlife, and half-forgotten early 2000s indie-rock bands.

Do we know if this unexpected speed attempt was maybe also an attempt at bringing more supplies to the Seven Summit team which were obviously underprepared and had not enough tents?

Dawa Sherpa reported at 7:30am PKT:
Everyone from SST team is back to Camp 3, all are safe and fine. Nobody made it to the summit, in few hours they will start destent to Base Camp.

John Snorri, Muhammad Ali Sadpara and Sajid Ali Sadpara still above Camp 3 at around 7900m.
(But he didn’t say if he goes up or down)

As well the speed ascent was aborted due technical problem with O2, controller exploded:/

Thank you SST for being on the mountain just to jeopardize everyone else’s attempt and nothing more.
