Surprise Midnight Summits on Kangchenjunga

As happened on Everest a week or so ago, different teams are making different decisions about route fixing on Kangchenjunga. Hours after Seven Summit Treks wrote that strong winds had forced their fixing team and clients back to Base Camp, a second group under Imagine Nepal reached the top of 8,586m Kangchenjunga just after midnight.

“Our climbing members [clients] and their supporting Sherpas departed from Camp 4 at approximately 6:30 pm on May 19, planning to reach the summit in the early morning of May 20,” wrote Imagine Nepal. Indeed, the outfitter reported 10 summits today, while 14 Peaks Expedition has confirmed six more. EliteExped was also present but has not reported on their summit numbers.

There is no mention of the original rope fixers, who had previously equipped the mountain up to 8,200m and whose clients had returned to Base Camp. Charles Page of Canada, who retreated to Base Camp last weekend, confirmed he is going up again on a second summit attempt, starting today. He hopes to summit on May 23.
