When we’re not outdoors, we get our adventure fix by exploring social media and the web. Here are some of the best adventure links we’ve discovered this week.
Sonic Layers: Alex Savu and his friends planned to attempt something only a handful of people manage each year: They would climb Yōtei-zan, a perfect cone-shaped volcano in Japan, and then ski inside the crater. Savu describes the sounds of nature and shifting sonic landscape as they make their way to the top of the volcano and then drop down inside.
Why Kayak Camping is Better Exercise Than Backpacking: Backpacking and hiking are more common hobbies than multi-day kayak camping, but is kayaking better for you? A range of studies show that kayaking delivers both physical and mental health benefits that rival, and in some ways exceed, those of traditional backpacking. The steady-state cardio of paddling engages the entire body, is low-impact, and builds endurance. It immerses you in nature without the strain of carrying heavy packs.

First ascents on Baffin Island
Unclimbed Baffin: In April 2025, Tom Harding, Leanne Dyke, James Hoyes, and Ben James visited Baffin Island. Instead of heading to the Weasel River Valley in Canada’s Auyuittuq National Park, the British team ventured east of the river to explore a plethora of unclimbed peaks and walls. After days of hauling their equipment onto the glacier, they set up camp near Mount Bilbo. Over the course of two weeks, they made seven likely first ascents, using local Inuit naming traditions for their new lines.
This is Why Your Dreams Go Bonkers at High Altitude: Many climbers and hikers notice vivid dreams during high-elevation trips. Environmental changes while backpacking, such as sleeping in unfamiliar places, fatigue, dehydration, and lower oxygen levels, significantly impact your sleep. Sleep becomes more fragmented, alters your REM cycles, and leads to more intense dream activity and better dream recall.

Alaska’s logistics guru
Alaska’s Miracle Maker: Chris Owens is an Alaska native and backcountry logistics expert. His deep knowledge of the state’s remote mountains has made him the go-to contact for ski films, expeditions, and media crews. He helps crews choose safe zones, navigate weather and snowpack challenges, arrange pilots and gear, and manage on-the-ground logistics while they explore Alaska’s wild backcountry.
This Thai Village Tops My Travel Tick List: Christine Gilbert describes why Ao Nang in Thailand is her favorite place to climb. The Southeast Asian village blends world-class limestone sport climbing with wellness and relaxation options. Though 90% of the approximately 700 routes are sport climbs, there are also a smattering of trad and bouldering routes. All the routes are on limestone karsts, with either a beach or jungle view.
Mount Elbrus avalanche
Skiers Run For Cover From Avalanche in Russia: Ski resort visitors in Russia have captured the moment a massive wall of snow barrelled down the slopes of Mount Elbrus. Skiers at the resort start to flee as the avalanche, intentionally triggered for safety reasons, engulfs the resort in a white cloud.
Yellowstone Grizzly Deaths Hit an All-Time High: New data from the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team shows a record number of grizzly bear deaths in the Yellowstone Recovery Zone during 2025. They recorded 74 bear deaths, with most of the deaths caused by humans. The data raises questions about the level of protection for bears and how humans and grizzlies can successfully share Yellowstone.
