Gasherbrum II Summit Push Begins

Gasherbrum II climbers are on their way up. They plan to summit on Saturday.

Horia Colibasanu of Romania left Base Camp at 3:30 am today. Colorful lights lit a busy Base Camp overnight as climbers put on their gear and set off. Colibasanu, who is climbing without bottled oxygen, plans to go one camp a day and reach the top on May 18. He estimates he will need two more days to return to Base Camp.

“Uxue [Murolas] and I will depart tomorrow,” another climber, Ignacio Barrio, told ExplorersWeb over InReach. “The weather looks completely clear, with high temperatures.”

The Spanish climber said they hope the snow on the upper sections of the mountain, between Camp 2 and the summit, will stabilize before they reach that point.

Other climbers are also on the way up Gasherbrum I (Hidden Peak). Roman Romancini of Brazil told the media yesterday that he might top out on Friday. There is no news about the Italian-Austrian team led by Francois Cazzanelli that holds climbing permits for Gasherbrum II and the rarely climbed and difficult Gasherbrum IV.
