Long-Line Operation to Retrieve Huserka From Langtang Lirung Postponed

A Nepalese rescue team is scheduled to fly to Langtang Lirung today. They will attempt to retrieve Ondrej Huserka’s body from the crevasse he fell into three days ago. Fog has grounded the mission so far.

The expedition to Langtang Lirung ended in the saddest possible way: Ondrej Huserka fell into a crevasse during the descent and, according to his climbing partner Marek Holecek, died of his injuries hours later.

However, Huserka’s friends and relatives have refused to cancel today’s rescue operation. As they said yesterday, they maintain hope despite the odds.

“We’ve got a team, we’ve got a helicopter, we don’t need anything [else] for now,” Wadim Jablonski, who is coordinating the rescue, posted yesterday evening.

It is unknown if Holecek is meant to take part in the rescue. He was alone with Huserka when the accident took place and knows the location of the crevasse.

Holecek recounted the accident in a detailed post on Facebook yesterday. He was blunt, declaring that any hope of finding the climber alive was a result of misinformation and “mirages.”
