An unidentified man died yesterday after being attacked by a polar bear at a campsite just outside Longyearbyen, in Svalbard.
Others nearby shot at the bear. Wounded, it headed toward the airport, which was nearby. It was later found dead by the parking lot.
None of the other half-dozen campers were harmed by the bear. Several experienced tour guides were living at the site.
This is the fifth person to be killed by a polar bear in Svalbard since 1971. The last fatal incident was in 2011, when a 17-year-old British student died during a school trip.
