Two Die in Utah BASE Jump, Including Slacklining Icon

This week, the extreme sports and slacklining communities have lost a legend. “Sketchy” Andy Lewis — a record-setting slackliner and BASE jumper — died last weekend on a BASE jump near Moab, Utah.

The 39-year-old was the most recognizable name in the slacklining world. He was so famous for his daredevil stunts that he even performed in the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show with Madonna.

The sheriff’s office confirmed both Lewis and 68-year-old Danny Joe Kregle died in a tandem jump — in which an experienced jumper is tethered to a passenger — at Mineral Bottom, a remote area outside Canyonlands National Park. Their parachute failed to deploy properly during the 85m jump.

A Reel Rock film produced 10 years ago for Outside TV captured the essence of his vibe.
