Third Death on Matterhorn This Week

Another climber fell to his death on the Matterhorn yesterday.

Hours before, rescuers from Air Zermatt had spotted the lifeless bodies of two other climbers at the base of the north side. Both accidents took place on the Hornli (NE) ridge, considered the normal route on the mountain from its Swiss side.

The third victim was reportedly a solo climber who fell while descending from the summit, some 800 meters above the ground. Another climber who was on the same route called the emergency services, the Ansa news agency reported.

There are no details yet about the causes of the two accidents this week. The identities or nationalities of the deceased climbers have also not been released The Hornli ridge, which is approached from Zermatt, is the most popular route up the iconic 4,478m peak.
