If you live in a place that gets cold enough that you can feel your nose hairs start to freeze when you step outside, you need a high-quality ski mask. Ski masks add essential warmth to your head, ears, mouth, and nose, making it much easier to spend time outside in the coldest of temperatures.

The Turtle Fur Shellaclava is the warmest ski mask I have ever used, making it perfect for those single-digit or below zero days on the mountain. Or, wear it while shoveling snow, or taking the dogs for a walk.

The company

Based in Vermont, Turtle Fur is known for high-quality products designed to keep you warm in cold temperatures. Plus, for the conscious consumer, they prioritize the environment, diversity, and giving back. Share a photo of your Turtle Fur product with the hashtag #projectwarmth and Turtle Fur donates one hat or cold weather accessory to someone in need.

I care about supporting companies that care about the environment and the people who live in it. So, Turtle Fur’s environmental sustainability initiatives which include using sustainable materials, and reducing packaging, makes for an easy recommendation. They are also in the process of becoming a B-Corp.

Tech details

The Shellaclava combines their Chelonia 150 fleece neckwarmer with a thinner but still fleece-lined hood. The double-layered fleece is UPF 50+ for sun protection, which is essential when you’re around snow because snow can amplify UV exposure. Also, I can’t guarantee this, but due to the thick double-layered fleece, the Shellaclava could double as an effective face mask to protect from germs.

The convertible design also makes it very versatile. You can wear it with the hood up, or down, as just a neckwarmer. The hood fabric is brushed spandex making it cozy and comfortable while still stretching to fit most heads. It wicks sweat and drys quickly if you get too hot. Plus, the thinner hood makes it ideal for wearing under a helmet or with a hat over it, perfect for snowboarding or skiing.

Any issues?

The only issue I have had so far is when I am wearing the Shellaclava with ski goggles and have the fleece part pulled all the way up over my nose, the goggles tend to fog up. But with such a thick and warm fleece covering, it’s to be expected.

Last thoughts

Overall, I recommend the Turtle Fur Shellaclava to anyone who lives anywhere bitterly cold or tends to run cold. For downhill skiing, ice climbing, or any activity that involves standing or sitting around for periods, it’s the perfect cold-weather accessory. If you’re sweating or moving a lot, check out the BlackStrap The Hood, our best overall ski mask and one that I have found breathes better for high output activities.
