5th Time Lucky? Tyler Andrews Sprinting Up Everest Again

Tyler Andrews of the U.S. left Everest Base Camp at 8:20 pm Nepal time. He hopes to summit Everest tomorrow, and if he does it in less than 20.5 hours, he will achieve the Fastest Known Time on the mountain without supplementary oxygen.

Andrews' tracker locating him shortly above base camp on a 3D map of the south side of Everest.

The scene has an air of deja vu: Andrews, in light clothes and holding poles, stands by the stone chorten at Everest Base Camp. His team then starts the chronometer, and he begins running into the night toward the Khumbu Icefall.

This marks Andrews’ fifth attempt in five months to set the FKT.

An hour before leaving, Andrews shared his thoughts in a video filmed by his running partner, Chris Fisher. Fisher will be at Base Camp checking Andrews’ progress and monitoring the radio.
