Wendy Searle Reaches Pole but Misses Record

Wendy Searle reached the South Pole yesterday after an all-night, 14-nautical-mile last haul. The 42-year-old Searle tried to beat the 39-day woman’s record for an unsupported solo trek. She took 43 days in the end.

Her rival, Jenny Davis, is not far away from the South Pole but has been hampered for several days by a leg injury. With the speed record out of reach, her goal has shifted to simply reaching her destination.
