CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

NOMINATIONS FOR THE AWARD IS OPEN UNTIL 22nd JANUARY 2016

Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) is one of few great polar explorers of all time. His expeditions and leadership qualities have inspired generations, and continue to do so today. The Shackleton Award is awarded in commemoration of this great man.

The purpose of The Shackleton Award is to honour outstanding expedition achievements and to inspire today’s explorers to new expeditions into unknown territories or conditions. The award will be awarded annually to an expedition found to be “real and novel, un-motorized and within polar areas or conditions”.

The 1st Shackleton Award was awarded at Expedition Finse on Saturday 15th February 2014 on the occasion of the centennial of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s visit there. The first laureate became the 2010 Northern Passage, the first same year circumnavigation of the north pole in a small trimaran, by Børge Ousland and Thorleif Thorleifsson.

The 2nd Shackleton Award was awarded Ben Saunders and Tarka L’Herpiniere for The Scott Expedition (October 2013 – February 2014).

The 3rd Shackleton Award will be awarded during Expedition Finse at Finse, Norway on Saturday 13th February 2016.
