Eight climbers led by experienced British Mountain Guide Martin Moran have gone missing near Nanda Devi East. It is believed that they may have been caught in an avalanche. The potential victims include four Britons, two Americans, an Australian woman and an Indian guide.
The group was targeting Nanda Devi East (7,434m) and a nearby unclimbed 6,000m peak. The last update (May 22) on Moran’s company page read: “The Nanda Devi team has reached their second base camp at 4,870m, their home for the next week. After a recce of the route, they will be making a summit attempt on an unclimbed peak at 6,477m.”
They were due back at Base Camp yesterday but failed to appear. A local disaster response and medical team has been sent to search for the missing climbers.
