Massive Everest Summit Wave Begins

The first groups among hundreds of climbers expected on Everest this week reached the summit on Sunday, including two veteran Sherpas who broke their own records.

Kami Rita Sherpa, 56, leading a team with Seven Summit Treks, has bagged his 32nd Everest summit, while Lakpa Sherpa, 52, often dubbed the Mountain Queen, has topped out for the 11th time. The latest time she summited Everest was in 2022.

Nuptse and Lhotse summits

Another group, including Kristin Harila of Norway, who climbed without supplemental oxygen, has reached the top of Nuptse. Harila plans to summit Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse this season, using Sherpa support but without bottled oxygen.

A five-member Sherpa team has fixed ropes to the summit of Lhotse, where further summits are now expected. Bartek Ziemski of Poland already summited the mountain last week. He did so without oxygen, ropes, a packed trail, or Sherpa support. He then skied down to Base Camp.
