ExWeb’s Links of the Week

Adventure Travel
Borge Ousland

Here at ExWeb, when we’re not outdoors, we get our adventure fix by exploring social media and the wider interweb. Sometimes we’re a little too plugged in, and browsing interesting stories turns from minutes into hours. To nourish your own adventure fix, here are some of the best links we’ve discovered this week…

Fireside with Ousland: The Scottish RGS sat down with polar veteran Borge Ousland a few years ago, covering everything from encountering “cute” polar bears to the dangers of solo polar expeditions.

Purja Talks: In between romping up Ama Dablam and festooning a giant flag on the summit and schmoozing sponsors, Nirmal Purja found time to chat to Forbes magazine. Interesting, though rather tame questions.

Honnold’s Mum: Actually, she’s more than the mother of free soloing’s greatest exponent. In the last few years, Dierdre Wolownick became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan in Yosemite, and she’s also written a book on her life.

Between the Lines: An interview with the popular editor of Alpinist, Katie Ives, who says, “We’re in the midst of a massive paradigm shift in climbing and mountaineering literature — there are a lot of new voices arising, people who are questioning old assumptions, who are looking beyond entrenched formulas and styles.”

Pioneer Passes: Snowboarding pioneer and founder of Burton Snowboards, Jake Burton Carpenter died this week. Carpenter was battling cancer for a second time.

Going Mainstream: King of hype Colin O’Brady bagged a spot on the Tonight Show to announce his latest expedition. Bear Grylls must be getting worried…
