ExWeb’s Links of the Week

Here at ExWeb, when we’re not outdoors, we get our adventure fix by exploring social media and the wider interweb. Sometimes we’re a little too plugged in, and browsing interesting stories turns from minutes into hours. To nourish your own adventure fix, here are some of the best links we’ve discovered this week…

The Meaning of Adventure: “If I could never tell anyone about this trip, never publish anything about my experience or share any of my photos, would I still put myself through this?” muses adventure writer Alex Roddie on a recent long-distance hike.

Killer Mountain: A great write-up from Outside magazine about the rescue of a withered Elisabeth Revol from high on Nanga Parbat in 2018. Of course, Kazakh strongman Denis Urubko was involved.

Canada Ice: Veteran Scottish mountain rescuer “Heavy” Whalley recalls climbing waterfall ice near Banff, back when there were only 100 routes in place. Check out his “ice belay” for a quick scare.

Calculus of Possibility: Much has been written about legendary alpinist Jeff Lowe since his passing in 2018, but this is a particularly good summary of his life and legacy.

Ousland Exclusive: Borge Ousland talks to veteran adventure writer Jim Clash on his and Mike Horn’s recent Arctic Ocean epic. “There were times I didn’t think we would make it,” Ousland admits.

Conqueror or the Conquered?: A great list of 45 classic climbing quotes. A personal favourite from wine-swilling maverick Warren Harding: “As I hammered in the last bolt and staggered over the rim, it was not at all clear to me who was the conqueror and who was the conquered. I do recall that El Cap seemed to be in much better condition than I was.”
