Kazakhstan: Bodegren meets media and haggles for camels

Currently in Almaty, Christian Bodegren is hunting for new “winterized” camels to start his 3300 km journey west to the Caspian sea. Unlike his low-key travels thus far; across the border Christian found himself surrounded by local media in Astana including the Swedish Ambassador in Kazakstan, Christian Kamill (no pun intended).

“The biggest news channels was there to meet me,” Bodegren reports.
“That was a strange feeling to see myself on the news later that day.”

The commotion is all part of Expo2017, an International Exposition scheduled to take place between June 10 and September 10, 2017 in Astana, to discuss “Future Energy” – where Christian’s low CO2 emissions camel-crossing of Kazakhstan obviously became an instant hit. Meeting with EXPO 2017 Commissioner Rapil Zhoshybayev, Bodegren promised to stop by Astana again after reaching the Caspian sea next summer.

Browsing the camel farms in Almaty right now, Christian reports his immediate problems: “The camels in Zaisan were unfortunately too wild for an expedition of this kind, and I was forced to try and find camels down south in the country.”
