Broad Peak: Another Setback for Urubko, Bowie

Don Bowie: Not great news for the Canadian.

Denis Urubko and Don Bowie are safe in camp at 7,000m on Broad Peak, ensconced in the same crevasse that Urubko used on a previous push. However, Urubko reports that Bowie is extremely sick with “pulmons”. It’s unclear whether he means a flu or more seriously, pulmonary edema. After resting for the night, the two will rappel back to Base Camp tomorrow.

It was always a possibility that the illness Bowie experienced during the approach might return.

Bowie suffered from a pulmonary illness in the approach, and it was always a possibility this could return to haunt the expedition.
