When we’re not outdoors, we get our adventure fix by exploring social media and the web. Here are some of the best adventure links we’ve discovered this week.
Climbing the Ribus: In 2009, Daniel Quinn and Andy Dean started making a list of Ribus — mountains with at least 1,000m of topographic prominence — in the Indonesian archipelago.
Since then, a team of international researchers has expanded the list. In 2024, they released World Ribus, a list of over 7,000 mountains.
Human Remains Discovered on Popular Utah Trail: Earlier this week, a hiker on the Bone Wash Trail in Utah stumbled across human remains in “various states of decomposition” and alerted authorities. The Washington City Police Department confirmed that the remains belong to a male and have transported them to the Medical Examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.
One of Australia’s best hikes
The Walls of Jerusalem Circuit: The Walls of Jerusalem Circuit in Tasmania is a six-day trek through the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. It is one of the best multi-day hikes in Australia. The trek takes you through pencil pine forests, ancient dolerite peaks, and past alpine lakes. This writer provides a daily run-through of what to expect.
One Year, 1,000 Boulders: In 2024, Pete Gunn climbed a staggering 1,016 boulders from f2 to 7C. Every year, Gunn writes a list of new crags he wants to visit and begins ticking them off. In early December, he realized he had notched 948 boulders and decided to go for 1,000 by the end of the year.
Trust your gut
When to Trust Your Fear: Kaydi Pyette was on a four-day backcountry trip with friends when she started to get a funny feeling. The shirtless man who set up camp nearby made her uneasy. A few hours later, he was screaming obscenities and stalking through the woods with a flashlight. The three girls quickly took down their tent and moved on.
Pyette talks about the importance of trusting your gut and distinguishing between intuition and imagined danger.
Inside the First Ascent of ‘Brilliant Blue’: In October 2023, Christian Black, Vitaliy Musiyenko, and Hayden Wyatt completed the first ascent of Brilliant Blue (AI 3 M7+), a new route on the northwest couloir and north face of White Sapphire (6,040m) in India’s Kishtwar Himalaya.
The group had initially aimed for the northwest face’s big wall, but an early winter storm prompted a change of plan. Instead, they decided on an unclimbed line that followed a snow and ice gully up the northwest face.
California wildfires
Survival Stories from the Los Angeles Wildfires: The wildfires in Southern California have impacted hundreds of thousands of people. With so many losing their homes, the outdoor community is pulling together. Many have organized fundraising events, and others have converted their shops into supply centers or opened their gyms so people can access showers and bathrooms.
The National Park That Draws Mushroom Hunters From Around the World: Nugrybauti means to be lost in the forest while hunting for mushrooms. It is a word you will hear throughout Lithuania’s Dzukija National Park. Locals have been foraging in the region for generations, and the park now draws mushroom hunters from around the world. The dense pine forest is home to over 300 species of edible fungi, and the locals want to pass on their foraging knowledge and traditions.
